When you first log into Civil War Microfilm, you start on the My Microfilm page. It displays a list of all of the microfilm publications and individual reels to which your current subscription(s) allow access. It also provides links to other screens where you can manage your account settings, and a quick Soldier Search form to locate tagged soldiers.

Login Panel

Once you're logged into Civil War Microfilm, the login form in the upper righthand corner of the browser (where you entered your username and password) will be replaced with a bold Welcome message (to let you know you're logged in) and several links:

• My Microfilm always takes you back to your My Microfilm page, regardless of which other page you've navigated to on Civil War Microfilm.
• My Account takes your to the My Account page, where you can update your email address and password and view and / or change information about your current subscription(s).
• Logout ends your current Civil War Microfilm session by logging you out of the website. It's a wise idea to click this link after you've accessed Civil War Microfilm from, for example, a public computer, in order to prevent unauthorized access to your account.

Soldier Search

To search for tagged soldiers directly from the My Microfilm page, enter the soldier's name into the Soldier Search text field and press Enter or click the Go! button. The Soldier Search Results screen will appear with a list of all tagged soldiers which match the name you entered.

Microfilm Reel List

The majority of the My Microfilm page is taken up by the long list of microfilm reels to which you are currently subscribed. They are organized by National Archives Publication Number. To view a reel of microfilm, simply click on its name. You'll be taken to the Reel Viewer with the reel of film you selected loaded and displaying its first image.

Clicking the view publication info link next to a publication's name will open a new window containing a PDF pamphlet from the National Archives describing the publication. You need a PDF reader (such as Adobe Acrobat) installed to view these pamphlets.

If you don't see a reel of film listed here, your subscription doesn't allow you to view it. If you think a publication or reel of film should be accessible by your login, but it doesn't appear here, please contact Civil War Microfilm technical support.
